5 Most Common Mistakes People Make When Purchasing a New Table

MISTAKE # 1

People settle for a size they don’t want and won’t fit best.

Most big box furniture stores tell you what you should purchase because the items they have are already made. You only have a few options and you settle for something you don’t really want because of the cost and what’s in stock. Some say the word “Custom”, but that’s just another term for common sizes they make and have in stock. If you want a larger table it will have to come with leaves. That’s the only way you can ship an item big from other countries.

MISTAKE # 2 People settle on a finish they don’t really want.

Most stores will have a few options for finishes of the table you’re looking for but not the exact finish you want. Some have 2 or 3 total options. Reclaimed might have 15 options for finishes with 3 different textures all offering different variations but that still might not be enough for some customers. Bring in your own stain and we will hand apply for you.

MISTAKE # 3

People think the tables are solid wood.

It’s nearly impossible for a company making tables overseas or in different climates to make a table out of solid wood without it cracking and defaulting. Sorry P______ B___ but this is just misleading. People think they are getting a solid wood slab table and once you click “details” the below pops up. MDF? VENEER?, Gross.

MDF = Medium-density fiberboard is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibers, often in a defibrillator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming it into panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is generally more dense than plywood.

MISTAKE #4

People don’t measure the space before searching for furniture. Before heading to the store make sure you measure your space and get a good idea of what size will fit in your space. For a dining table we recommend 36” or 3 feet around any table. This would also be the space from the edge of the table to any major walkway or doorway or opening.

Are you going to be putting a sideboard in the room or hutch for china? Are you going to have big chairs on the ends? What type of seating arrangement are you going to have? All chairs, bench and chairs, 2 benches, big chairs on ends?

MISTAKE #5

People aren’t practical.

If you have 2 young kids under the age of 10 you probably shouldn’t buy a $3,000 smooth table from us with a semi-gloss finish. You should probably buy a rustic table from us with a matte plant-based finish so when your kids carve a knife into the table because they are mad because they can’t watch the last of their show on the ipad, you won’t freak out. Reclaimed has so many options for every customer and wants you to think about your lifestyle and what you will be doing on the table besides eating at it.

If you entertain a lot or have a large family you can add extensions on the ends of the table for overflow. If you have a narrow space we can make the table a bit thinner so chairs can fit around comfortably.
